I'm genuinely sorry I can't take a compliment.

I know it's insulting to the giver, but I feel so painfully embarrassed. It's kinda intimidating when people see me and have a positive reaction.

I only give compliments that I mean. I don't really see a point in giving a compliment that I don't mean when I could easily find something real to compliment 🤷

@ChiefJustWalks I get it, I'm the same way. I'm definitely a dick for blowing off compliments, something I've gotta work on.
your son loves you and that's the best i can do to compliment you...obviously you are doing something right....keep it up and do the best you can

Don’t worry about. They’ll keep coming I’m sure

I am the same way...it's tsken years but I now to force my self to shut up, and then say "thank you, I appreciate that"

I'm not good at accepting them either.
EldritchFox · 41-45, F
@thepeculiarpanda I can't exactly figure out why, probably been called fugly and weird too many times 😂
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
@EldritchFox I just got torn down by mom my entire life and my self-esteem is nonexistent. 😅
I usually just play a character in my head when I get compliments that don't align with how I see myself. A temporarily extroverted version that plays along for a bit so the compliment has some place to land and doesn't feel awkward, unless I'm really close friends and comfortable with someone, then I'll tell them to stfu or give a silent side eye because they know me well enough to know I won't believe the compliment lmao.

It's not easy and actually super uncomfortable but it's probably a good thing to see yourself through someone else's eyes. You deserve kind words too.
EldritchFox · 41-45, F
@HijabaDabbaDoo I prefer the side eye 😂

The weird part is I like complimenting people. I want them to feel good. So it feels like double crap when I won't let it feel good.
I feel the same. Compliments make me oddly self conscious. I appreciate them more than people probably realize but there's always a little voice in my head questioning them, like maybe people are just being polite.

At the same time, I love giving genuine compliments too and I truly mean it. I guess I need to remember that other people might be just as sincere when they say nice things to me idk.

@mindstruggle This. That's why I feel so bad because someone is trying to be genuinely sweet and that deserves to be received.
@EldritchFox
Imagine both of us giving each other a compliment? Lol but yea I'd appreciate it knowing how genuine you are.
