I still freeze up and become unsure of how to respond - so it probably appears that I ignored it to others.
Internally, I am mentally tearing myself to shreds because that's the only thing that really happened to me as a child. No one ever tells the special needs kids that they're doing a good job, all things considered, when they can just threaten to send them to the local special needs school that their parents have worked to ensure that they are afraid of... even though there are aspects of a special needs school that might be a better learning environment for them.
