I am Romani and white
I’m half Caucasian and half Romani ( an ethnic group from India from 500-1000 years ago). The thing is unless I let myself tan a lot in the summer I look very light skinned so I can pass for white easily. Romani people also known as gypsies have had both positive and negative representation in the media. I like the cartoon character Esmeralda from the hunch back of notre dame 1996 Disney because she is kind, intelligent, independent, and strong willed. She is fiery and capable. Only thing is I find her a bit oversexualized. Americans don’t know much about Romani as an ethnic or racial group. Some white Europeans are very prejudiced against Romani. There are stereotypes of Romani as dirty people, thieves, con artists and swindlers. The women are seen as exotic and very sexualized. Also that gypsies steal children and are loud and violent. Good at singing and dancing and live nomadically as free spirits. Also that we don’t value education and don’t want to work honest labor. We have old reputation as great craftsmen. We are psychics. Also that we are beggars. Not saying some Romani do engage in criminal and antisocial behavior. But it’s not all of us. There are many decent Romani who live morally correct lives. But in communities that are less modern the women have fewer rights than the men. Young marriage is prevalent in these communities and so is domestic violence. I am just reminding the non-Romani to remember to take each of us as individuals and to not tar us all with the same brush. I could go on. We are truly an international people we have spread through throughout the world and managed to survive even after being enslaved in the past. Even after being run off and killed in the holocaust. Forced sterilization programs . I could go on ….
