My B.A. in Lit. prepared me for a lifetime in restaurants and retail. Now I'm old and feeble and my only income is Social Security. I'm lucky if I get to eat every day. But at least I didn't die in a hopeless and worthless war like Vietnam.

I've always remembered your story about how you delayed graduating from college to avoid the draft... or to at least out-wait the Vietnam war... correct me if I misinterpreted your previous story about this.
As far as I'm concerned, you did the right thing and I would have done the same had I been in your unfortunate and certainly untimely situation at the time.
I have one question about your B.A.
When you say your B.A. in Lit prepared you for a lifetime in restaurants and retail, I don't understand where you can make that connection or comparison, because I don't see what a B.A in Lit has to do with the food and beverage industry. Please clarify, thanks!

OH, I fully agree with you about your college degree! I'm in the same boat you are in that regard! I received my Bachelor of Commerce Degree in university, then very stupidly went and got my MBA. The reason I subsequently became self-employed after all was said and done was because the B. Comm and MBA became the equivalent of the old secondary school graduation diploma. This is because everyone has one and no academic credential separates me from anyone else anymore!
I talked myself into thinking that my university Degrees would be helpful in running my own business, but in fact, they are useless for that as well!
They are useless because ANYTHING you learn in university is not geared toward running a business, but instead is geared ONLY toward becoming a good employee who seeks employment from a good employer!
Our education system in North America does not foster self-employment, but only encourages one to become a highly educated employee who starts every job with no hands-on previous experience and therefore is only paid minimum wage because they have no experience!
