adriana smith. adriana smith. adriana smith.

im seeing too many posts talking about this and not saying her name. she is a woman in georgia being kept “alive” solely to be an incubator right now. she is brain dead, but because she was 8 weeks pregnant and there was a heartbeat, her partner&family were given no say in what happens to her. for over 90 days now she’s been kept on machines to keep her body alive simply to keep the pregnancy going. the doctors are planning on continuing this until the fetus is viable outside the womb (32 weeks according to every article ive found.)

all of this is because of a fetal heartbeat law, a law that restricts abortions. this is inhumane and fucking disgusting. my heart goes out to her, her partner, her family and her poor son that is visiting her thinking that mommy is just asleep.

@MicrowaveDinner eh not me. at all. i wouldn’t want my loved ones to suffer. she’s brain dead. she was NINE WEEKS pregnant. i would understand if she was towards the end of her pregnancy. but she wasn’t. & her family is having to pay the medical bill?! hell no. so wrong.

found this post. & couldn’t have said it better.

“As a neurologist, I want to gently but firmly say this: brain death is not a coma. It is the complete and irreversible loss of all brain function, including the brainstem, which controls the ability to breathe and sustain consciousness. There is no blood flow, no electrical activity, and no reflexes.

It’s not sleep. It’s not something you can just wake up from. There is no awareness, no recovery, no miracle waiting to unfold. It’s not something you can pray away.

With that being said, it is heartbreaking to hear about a deceased woman being reduced to a vessel for childbirth. It’s dehumanizing. Not to mention it’s medically complex and fraught with potential complications. It requires constant ICU level support, infection control from various tubes, lines, & catheters, hormone replacement (because yes your brain plays a big role in pregnancy). And for what?! The chances of a delivering a healthy baby is extremely low under these conditions.

But even more importantly, if she did not give explicit consent to this while she was alive, it’s a violation of her autonomy. We don’t take organs from the dead without permission. We don’t perform surgery without consent. Why should this be any different? A woman is not just a womb—not in life, and certainly not in death.”

@MicrowaveDinner there is a HIGH chance the baby will not survive either, so.. it’s all so fucked up. this world has gone insane.
