We can criticize our government and politicians and not be arrested for it.

Untrue. If you incite violence, you get arrested same as in the States: that happens. Last time I remember was last summer and it was of a woman who was arrested. After due process the charges were dropped. Perhaps check the sources in your reading material and talk to some of us who live here. I like hearing your take on things.
I keep reading where UK police arrest people for their Facebook posts, especially white males.

@TexChik Exagerrated but there are laws to protect people from mere hate posts or incitements to racism, violence and the like.
What has happened have been a small number of the Police investigating people who have noto actually done anything really wrong, but they do that because someone else has complained to the Police about them.
There are no laws against criticising politicians, provided it is sincere criticism and not spiteful hatred or calls to harm them.
