The word "socialism" is automatically associated with "totalitarianism" in the US. I suspect that even for Europeans who do not vote for candidates from a socialist party, this would be surprising.

@DrWatson Had a friend from Bulgaria and they moved here, worked with her for awhile. She was telling me about the life there. She had a degree in chemistry and was the inspector of water treatment plants in a very large district. She had to drive through the mountains for her routes, I think she said each route took about 3 weeks and then onto other routes. She said the professional jobs didn’t pay very much compared to here. I asked her why people pursued them & she said for the love of education, maybe the government helped pay for that. Anyway she was telling me that everyone had gardens to grow their own veggies & can them and make pickles etc. I asked her why and she said food was expensive there. Which kind of left me puzzled because they were able to own a nice large home. I guess things are different under Socialism. She had no problem with it but for some reason wanted to live here. She was trying to get a similar job here, she was well qualified & had the experience and nobody considered her. Her command of English was excellent and she was a graceful lady. Died at a young age (about 50 years of age) from a stroke.

@cherokeepatti I was not referring to Eastern Bloc /Soviet "socialism", which really wasn't socialism at all.(And I think the cold war experience is what accounts for Americans' association with the word. But this is ironic, seeing as Europe was a lot closer to the iron curtain geographically than we were.) I am referring to socialist parties that hold seats in the parliaments of contemporary western democracies.

@DrWatson Those aren't true Socialism, their costs of living is insanely high, true Socialism tries to keep costs down while keeping everyone working, everyone pulls their own weight, free loading isn't permitted, meaning chronic welfare parents do not exist.
