Historically have we left the age of debate for one of coercion?

Not sure we ever left the age of coercion in the first place. History seems to be a combination of both coercion and debate depending on the time, place, and peoples involved. We can hope for debate, but the threat of coercion always seems to be looming over the debate.

it sure doesn't seem very many people even have the skills or ability to have a civil debate anymore.
