My guess would be that they seem like cheating. They aren't truly "biking". It's more like a glorified motorcycle. They can be dangerous as well if they are riding on regular bike paths, as they go faster than typical human powered bikes. The trails around here don't allow them.

@Magenta They're no faster than a regular bike if you pedal fast enough, I can easily overtake them with my racing bike that is 100% mechanic.
They become dangerous if people tune them, because you can easily push them to go faster than the speed after which those tiny brakes they have are effective, but that's the case with pretty much every vehicle.
I think a lot of people / politicians hate them because they're unconventional/new, nothing more.
