They could just want the anonymity/privacy.

They could want to just interact without all of the superficial elements.

They could need it this way to maintain distance.

Any of these reasons.

Maybe they're shy, or they just don't think their appearance is something that is important especially since it's online and a platonic relationship. For some it's strange, i know.. but for others it might make absolutely perfect sense. I am saying this because i ACTUALLY did this lol. I never showed my best friend what i looked like for almost 6 years but had described myself and they thought i was a catfish until one day i just ended up popping on my cam. i just had to do it when i was personally comfortable, not when i was pushed or pressured to do it.

That being said, that does NOT mean that the situation you are writing about is the same, they could be lying, not have a camera, unattractive in actuality or just in their own eyes. so many reasons. who knows. i'd just ask them straight up. But i always told people why i didn't do it.

It’s a long con ?
I think you've named all the reasons. I can't think of anything else.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@MsSwan I asked many times but not annoyingly and yes she saw me.
@4thdimensiondream What did she say when you asked?
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@MsSwan just that she wasn’t comfortable doing that. I saw early on it bothered her when I asked so I tried to respect that as time went on. I had no idea we’d be friendly for over 5 years.

That'd be me.

@4thdimensiondream the answer is like Gold to me.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@class mysterious just like her (or you).
class · F
@4thdimensiondream I'm just me.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
Appreciate the feedback. I did ask many times and never really got a straight answer. I never pushed (too hard)! Five plus years is a long time though. I found it very strange.
You’ve listed possible reasons.
Or they may want to preserve anonymity with you, despite the trust you think is established in your friendship.
Just ask why so you get a direct answer.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@CookieCrumbs I have many times and I’m fine the way it is. Was just curious. I’m sure she has her reasons. I’m just different about it. Once i get to know you, I don’t have secrets. But we’re all different. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

@hunkalove not from US
TheHammer · M
Because they don't want to. That should be enough.
In years I have only shared mine twice. And it will be many years before I do again. You never know what friend is going to flip out on you one day after years of friendship and now there's this weirdo with info and a pic of yours.
I'm more concerned with those who keep asking for a picture and when they don't get it, they go a post a question on why do a friend of five years refuses to show their picture.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@TheHammer good to know you are an expert on my relationship with my friend. Besides I asked a legit question which is better than 90% of what is usually posted here, and some people took the time, as did you, to take a few minutes to think about it and reply without being obnoxious. But hey that’s how it goes in 2026.
SpectralMourning · 46-50, M
Perhaps they just don't see the need if it's an online friendship.
gothfairy · F
Some questions need to be asked to the intended person directly. You can't expect a bunch of strangers (who don't know the inner workings of some stranger on the internets mind) to give you the answers only your friend knows. Posts like this give witch hunt vibes.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@gothfairy thanks for the advice. I have absolutely no idea what your witch hunt comment meant. I’m not putting my friend down in anyway I was just curious what others thought.
Likestoenjoylife · 51-55, M
Posted pics of my wife and myself when I started a few months ago seemed like no one cared so eventually took them down no one has asked since! Think maybe that took the mystery out of wondering what we looked like just an average couple nothing special.
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@Likestoenjoylife interesting take. Online relationships and friendships is still a relatively new thing.
MrSmartyPants · 46-50, M
I believe it could be that they don't think of themselves as looking good. Or too good looking and not wanting attention for that alone, and last possibility I can think of is not wanting their identity stolen, having that happen before may cause a strong and understandable reason for not sharing one's actual face on a public forum again.
Magenta · F
Hmmm.. trying to protect their identity in real life, for privacy reasons? Did they give you a reason why they won't?

Have they seen yours?
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@Magenta yes they’ve seen mine. She always said she just doesn’t like sending pics. Pretty sure she had complete trust in me except when it came to this. I had no secrets with her.
Magenta · F
@4thdimensiondream Hmm.. after five years. Seems odd or suspicious especially with the reason she gave.
Because you can always keep it from a distance or even a half face versus a full on close up..
4thdimensiondream · 70-79, M
@Magenta she kind of did a couple of half faces lol. Makes me wonder if some kind of disfigurement or something. Although I asked here and there I really didn’t press it.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Those would be the most obvious reasons. Perhaps wanting to keep this place anonymous.
Floki · M
They are hiding something
