probably because a tremendous number of people are just 'collectors' and they expect you are one too. e.g. they think you're going to add (and expect to be added} to push up you sw algorithm stats and then you'll never interact again

@SilentObZerver There's no need to. If we want to have contact we can without being friends.
Used to be the main reason was that people hid their albums unless you were a friend.
People come and go so much that a large number of my "friends" either aren't active or have deleted their account.
So it's not a lack of friendliness, just a lack of need.

For myself if there's too much adult content.
If I feel they are way too young to talk to ,as I am in advanced in years , I don't add them ,it's nothing personal.
The first part I'm not into and the second I really believe I'd have nothing in common to talk about.
I do however try to be polite when I answer on a public post
