Neither of my parents smoked.
Back in the 1950's, it was expected that even nonsmokers would allow guests to smoke.
So we had ashtrays all around the house. I grew up thinking that ashtrays were invented as a place to put loose change, stray buttons, paper clips, etc.
When certain friends were coming to visit, my father would say, "Time to empty the ashtrays!"
