I Grew Up In a Smoke-filled Home

Well.....kinda!

I spent my first couple of years of life living with my mum, a very heavy smoker, and then, from around 5 years of age onwards, I stayed with dad who didn’t smoke.

From 13 onwards I spent time between them both, as they were separated, and that was fine....

I think, because of just how glamorous mum was - and is - and her smoking that just made me want to start up too....

Ashtrays, near overflowing, were always in mum’s house. I rarely seen her without a cigarette either in her mouth or between her fingers.

All that cultivated my love of smoking, of the smell of cigarettes and of being a smoker myself.

My parents both basically smoked themselves to death. My dad died of COPD a few weeks ago. Growing up i just hated all the smoke and tried everything to get them both to quit, but only death stopped them. Now i absolutely hate the smell of any kind of smoke at all.

@MartikaDuponte1 Thankyou! I had always thought that my parents generation would be the last ones smoking but sadly i was wrong. My mother is still alive (just) and i'm actually listing to her cough herself to death as i type this and all my other comments. Some of my dads last words were about how much he wished he'd never smoked.

@SW-User Yes, I hear that from others too.

My grandmother, on my mum’s side, was a heavy smoker too and she never wanted to stop.

I guess, in some ways, it’s just genetics that stop some people getting these illnesses and diseases.

For me, as a responsible and - hopefully - kinda intelligent person, I weigh up the pros and cons and make my own decision, which is to smoke.

But that’s just me and my feelings....

@MartikaDuponte1 I agree. The main thing is that you are happy doing what you're doing and not inflicting it on others like our parents did to us. I've always been terrified i'd get what they've got.
