Do you or don't you?

My mother started smoking at fourteen and still smokes now at seventy three, my dad gave up rolling his own cigarettes at fifty and he's seventy five. So is it genetics? If my dad had continued to smoke would he still be here? Who knows? I never smoked because it never appealed to me, but my husband smokes cigars and even though I hate this habit, it smells better.

I don't mind the smell of pipe smoke. There was one great uncle in the family who used to smoke a pipe and I kind of liked it; the rest however, uncles etc. all smoked cigarettes until their doctors warned them of the consequences. It's kind of funny how all my uncles and great uncles quit at once.

My dad never smoked but died with COPD, as a result of breathing in a ton 2nd hand smoke at work for 35 years. I know all about it, because I visited his office on occasion, and it had about the worst air quality I've ever experienced inside a building.

My mom smoked up the house for a while behind Dad's back when one of her ditsy friends told her she could lose weight that way. 馃槕

I'm allergic to everything, so have never tried it.

@SW-User Passive smoking is just as dangerous but people don't often think about that. I read that warnings about smoking goes back to the fifties yet it was always the social thing to do. My mum is like a chimney yet she boasts her lungs are clear, she doesn't get it can affect other parts of your body.

@Eclecticallysound My dad began working in those smoky offices sometime in the 1950's. As I was growing up in the 60's and 70's, there wasn't all that much awareness among the adults I knew of the harmful effects of smoking. I remember well those awful hot summer nights on the lake when I was a kid in a tent full of smoking adults playing cards. I had to step outside for air frequently. 馃あ
