I think my subconscious was trying to give me advice last night.

I dreamt that my older brother (who has medical experience in real life) noticed that my side was swollen and started pressing on it and telling me that it was concerning.

In the dream, I told him something that is true in real life, and nobody in my family knows: my doctor did a blood test, and reported to me that my liver enzymes are elevated. It is an early sign of liver damage, in my case, from excessive alcohol consumption. It doesn't actually cause visible swelling like in the dream, but that is a forgivable detail as dreams often employ creative liberties in order to convey a message.

My brother turned to our parents and started poking fun at me. Something sarcastic like, "Oh, his liver enzymes are elevated because he won't stop drinking. That's great." I lightly slapped him on the arm and gave him a look as if to say, This is secret, to which he respected my wish and kept quiet.

Out of earshot of our parents, he gave me advice. My recollection of it is spotty now because I can't remember all the details of the dream, but it was something like, "You have to recognize that your health is important and decide right now that this is the end of your drinking. Not later — right now."

It was much more profound than that but I just can't remember them.

Anyway, I find it interesting that my dream would embody my brother and give me such vivid advice (even if I unfortunately don't remember the exact words now). Like I said, nobody in my family knows about my medical situation right now, so this is not something that occurred in real life. My subconscious created it all in an attempt to speak to me.

I will listen. Today is my 9th day sober. I have some withdrawal symptoms but the medication is helping a lot. I am very depressed because a lot of sad and scary things have happened lately but the message is clear. No more drinking.
