Your not counting what she already had at home.
A different time totally. They simply didn't need to buy certain things.
Milk was delivered to your home! I know this because it was happening even in the 1960s!
Your neighbors gave you excess food they couldn't eat! Like from their trees. Our neighbors where going that as well in the 1960s.
Then there was your own garden. I grew green peppers and tomatoes as a kid!
My father was a baker. He brought enough pastries home to feed school.
Just try to do that today!
They grow trees now that the fruit is inedible. Fertilizer costs serious money when back then they were glad you took it away from the farms.

@DeWayfarer A fair point but the message seemed to mean ignoring what was already at home.
I think the main change has been much greater availability of foods once governed by the seasons.
Our family's milk was normally delivered, and I had mine delivered when I moved into my own home in the 1990s; but eventually I had to stop because too many bottles were being stolen from the doorstep.

@DeWayfarer Oh, yes, very much so.
@DeWayfarer Things you could get for free, especially in agricultural regions. People had an abundance and shared with their neighbors. My grandmother told me about how her neighbors and friends would bring her eggs and collard greens and other produce.

@Jokersswild could unfortunately isn't will. As long as this capitalism streak keeps up it never will.
The agriculture sector needs the little extra income that it gets from the bi products like fertilizer.
The gmo seeds are cheaper because they can not be reproduced.
It's on and on and on.
Trump's tariffs most certainly don't help the agriculture industry.
Add cut backs to federal subsidies in agriculture they'll have to sell their farms.
Who will buy the farms? Big agriculture companies that do things in mass quantity.
Bye bye small farms and free anything!

@Lilnonames you know that I grew up around Disneyland.
You could actually get in without paying in the 1960s. Of course the rides you had to buy tickets. But getting in cost nothing.
