There's a theory that it's like a Penelope's shroud here; restorations are done partially and restarted over and over so that they can get infinite money from the central govt 🥴
@deadgerbil yeah I'm wondering what kind of criteria there are. On the 4th and 5th pics this is the Erechthium, the columns that look like women are the caryatids and they're replicas, five of the original ones are in the museum here and the other one is in the British museum, same with many of the marbles from the Parthenon, the original ones are in museums.
@Elessar @deadgerbil @HannibalAteMeOut This conversation reminded me of an incident that happened once in I think Luxor in upper Egypt which went viral during a restoration of a room inside an Ancient Egyptian temple and there was this wall with Hieroglyphic typing on it and Mr contractor put a cement base on top of it and repainted it so it looks "better" 🤦♂️ I don't know what happened next but I mean wth!!
