Was I in the Wrong?

Okay so to explain I had placed an order on Etsy and the seller seemed nice and had a lot of good reviews before I made the purchase. it was on the 7th of this month and would arrive by the 12th

Well the first red flag was that the Tracking number for my item said it was invalid on the carrier tracking service. ( USPS) so I contacted the seller and he stated that it was the right Tracking number. fast forward to two days later. and I go to check the comments under what I ordered to see if anyone else had this issue but I could not find the item. so I messaged the seller again and he said that it appears that Etsy had removed the entire listing for said item with him saying that "This has not happened before" so I wait for the day of the supposed delivery and I still had not received my package.

So today I messaged him again and he said since Etsy removed the listing, he was unable to track the package himself which I've never heard of that happening ( Second Red Flag). with him saying that if I didn't have it by the 19th that he'd send it again. well I needed this item buy the 12th which was why I paid for the quick delivery and after discussing it with my wife I decided that this situation seemed too suspicious so I contacted Etsy for a refund. which they said they would refund me.

So the seller contacts me again saying "well I guess you weren't cool with waiting, if it still comes I guess you get it for free. and canceled the order all together.

I don't know but there seemed to be some venom in that final message, so I tried to message him back apologizing for the refund and that I'm sure it wasn't his fault but now he no longer is replying to me. I don't know if I was in the wrong or not. afterall how can you give me a Tracking number that apparently doesn't exist on any carriers websites I used it on to check the status of my order.

Then say that not even you can see the Tracking number because Etsy removed the listing from the shop. any opinions on this would be appreciated as I don't want it to seem like I'm an ass for following my gut as I've been scammed on Etsy in the past.

You seem to have done the right thing. The seller was scamming you. False tracking nbr and the package not showing up is justified in asking for your money back.

@Confined Even just messaged me back saying the Government shutdown was to blame but I've ordered from other sites with no issue.

@SladetheMentor I had an ebay seller do the same years ago. He would take money and never send anything. (ebay eventually banned him since he could not produce a single valid tracking nbr.)
