The Mercat de Boqueria, Las Ramblas, Barcelona

The first documentation of the existence of this market dates from the thirteenth century, when it sold meat. Gradually, the market expanded, with local farmers setting up stalls selling their own produce. The market was not formalized until 1827, when it had two hundred stalls selling meat, fish, and other produce. Following the destruction of the Convent of Saint Joseph after the secularization of the monasteries in 1837, the land was allocated to the stallholders to establish a covered market on the site.

This is one of the main places we buy our food in the local area.
