I was never great at geography

But why did FedEx pick up my new tablet in California on Friday, and ship it to Memphis, TN to deliver it to me in New Mexico on Tuesday?

Because they haven't made a specific route for your parcel, as would be costly for them to separately delivery your product. They usually have prescheduled lots with specific routes, they just add your item with the prescheduled consignment. This way they save the cost, however it can seem long route to you. They do their own calculations to cut cost.
@ABCDEF7 I know it has to make sense somehow - they're still in business. What you said seems logical.

I live in the midwest.....and can't understand why I have watched packages cross the country looking like a graph of a ping pong game from coast to coast to get here. California to Chicago to New Jersey to Cleveland and then to Michigan. I'm just glad they don't charge me by the mile for delivery.
@bowman81 It's so bizarre.

It happens here too with the local delivery services. They take the most inefficient longest roundabout route which is just perplexing.
@SW-User Once i was live-tracking a Walmart delivery and the delivery guy drove clear off the map!

The driver wanted to visit his grandmother in Memphis!
No idea. But I’ve seen that happen, too. And I immediately check the records: what was I charged for shipping ? 😳
@bijouxbroussard I was charged $0.00 for shipping. Maybe they had an attack of self-loathing.

That doesn't seem to be the most efficient route!
@FeetAreFantastic Heck. I could've driven over and gotten it!
