I Love Shopping At Thrift Stores

In so many aspects of my life, from the daily to various events of which I am a part, the thrift store has played a role.

From the obvious like Goodwill and the Salvation Army Thrift Store to little obscure donation-fueled resale storefronts, it is something of a treasure hunt to explore these places. Austin, Texas is a favorite destination as that cities varied thrifts tend to wind up with some of the best stuff! None the less, I tend to make some amazing finds even in my own area.

Furniture and housewares, clothes (I buy a lot of eclectic shits and suit coats), and even toys have come home with me from thrift stores. We once stocked up on some matching picture fr<x>ames at a bargain price and found an unopened Batmobile toy for our godson in Goodwill stores. Several pieces of furniture in the house were thrift finds. I even found a number of display racks of a variety I used to favor when I had a business that needed them at such a great price that I bought them all up and resold them later the same week.

By far the most unique thrift experience was visiting Austin's Goodwill Warehouse Store (or Outlet, something like that). It is a cavernous building in an industrial office district off the beaten path that seems to be the Mecca of thrift shopping. Rows and rows of rollaway bins are crammed full of every imaginable item and easily over 100 people are filling up shopping carts to buy these used wares by the pound! Entire sections of bins are closed off and refreshed constantly and regulars as well as first time and occasional patrons anxiously await their reopening. Once the section is reset a piranha-like feeding frenzy of junk begins. While I have only braved this once, I recommend it as a delightfully bizarre thrift store experience.

There is also a Facebook page that someone started called "WTF - Weird Thrifting Finds". It is a brilliant showcase of photos taken at thrift stores of the most bizarre items one could ever imagine. Some things defy all logic and good taste, so it is little wonder that they found their way into donation piles and ultimately thrift stores. If you are on Facebook and love thrift stores, you should check it out and contribute when the truly bizarre crosses your path while shopping.

Love the post.
My first independent purchase was a $5.00 Steamer Travel Trunk, original lining and wooden hangers. It weighs a ton but has moved with me since I was seventeen.
It's currently the coffee table in my living room.
My daughter recently insisted that we pick up Christmas Tree from a local Goodwill that sells by the pound. That too was a five dollar investment that will last many years as it serves our holiday decoration needs.
Great suggestion on the fb page!
