@DavidW I can't imagine it even then which is why I was surprised, but there were still a lot of very old-fashioned attitudes about in the 1960s.

May I ask her field of work, without giving details or identities?

Even so, why the management wanted the husband's permission instead of simply stating a maximum hem-altitude, is a puzzle!

As a passenger you weren't even on the hovercraft for long enough to fall in lust with the staff, as I remember from one two-way trip back in the 1970s or early '80s. Only about three-quarters of an hour from Ramsgate to Calais, I think, in something with all the luxury of a bus on a bumpy road.

@ArishMell ....and she asked me too, but she saw the hilarity of it. I had no problem with it anyway. I did the trip myself several times and didn't really enjoy it.

I recently picked my granddaughter up from school in my car… as she got in-I pointedly looked at the bare legs - almost up to the top of her thighs, as she sat next to me waiting to pull out.I did not have to say a word! Nor could I think of much to say either - (my sister and I, and generations before and of those to come after - have no doubt rolled their school skirts up to become minis! ) Happy Days!

@lancashirelady50...my sister was just the same, but I think my three granddaughters each risk a few inches higher. I wonder, is that's why so many schools introduce long trousers into the girls' uniform?
