It is true that when hem lengths were short teachers at the front of the classroom would often be able to see underwear. But girls wore uniform underwear so it wasn't as though we were getting glimpses of racy undergarments.

@Oldmanjimbo our school uniform dresses were very short. That's the way it was back in the 60s

@Oldmanjimbo Yes. Of course one common feature was that rules were rules, and if you broke them you were liable to be dealt with. It didn't matter if the rules in one school were rather different from those in another.

@MartinII Absolutely. What children need is to know what the rules are and to know that there will be consequences if the rules are broken.
