I feel the same way about 'followers'. What cheeses me off are those who 'follow' me, but never participate in anything I'm writing about. Instead, they sit on the sidelines and are quite happy with being entertained by my posts or my responses to other people's posts, but add nothing to the mix.
What I do is keep a close eye on my followers list. If someone suddenly appears that I've never heard of before, I immediately delete them from my list. Anyone I've given a chance to but who sit idly by to let me entertain them with stuff to read anytime they login here, I delete them as well.
I don't need people following me around the website like they were a dog on a leash. If they occasionally add something to a post that I get involved with and they followed me there to see what I had to say, that's fine.
