Perhaps it is. People get a distilled view of yourself whereas as a person trying to find the real them has so much to pick through that a clear view is impossible, not seeing the wood for the trees. Plus most of us, I think, have a preset view of who we *want* to be, or think we are, rather than the person we actually are.
