I dream of yesterday

Yesterday sometimes is far in the past and brings, at least for me, a longing for things lost.

I was doing errands recently and while getting gas, I remembered a distant time in the past when you went to get gas at a local gas station and it was a mini social outing.

You pulled up to your station and there he was, the old guy who owned and ran the gas station. Always had a smile on his face and as he walked over to your car he called out asking how the family was doing, or asked if you ever got x, y or z done, etc., and then began filling up your car.

After that still gabbing away with you he checked under the hood to be sure all the fluids were topped off and as he walked around your car he looked at the tires to see if they needed air. If he was suspicious of one that might need air, he took his tire pressure gauge out and checked it. Then, still gabbing with you, he washed your windshield and sent you off with some comment like "Safeway has watermelons on sale today".

I miss those days... it feels as if life was so much more civil and social, somehow kinder.

With a wirelessly connected world, we have become more disconnected.

Just look at groups of people or families sitting at a restaurant. Instead of talking to each other, they are always on their phones. It’s become an acceptable behavior because everyone is doing it.

We don’t talk to our neighbors anymore. Why? Because if we want to talk somebody, we could just go online.

This is our world. This is our today.

A longing for those seemingly ordinary yet oh so meaningful real life connections. I truly fear how much the fabric of our society is decaying because people seem hopelessly addicted to staring at their device screens, losing both the desire and even the ability to truly connect with others. Very scary, very sad.

My nostalgia is particularly strong in this regard. I often think back to times like you’ve described. And yes, there are incredible benefits to living in this modern world. But at what cost. 😔

I miss the old days too🥺

@moonlightlullaby while the good old days weren't always good, they were kinder and there was a warmth to them that life today doesn't have... that's the part of the old days I miss.

I don't miss having to wash dishes by hand🤣

@Ontheroad I totally agree...

Although it's funny you say that last part. I have a dishwasher and never even use it 😏🤭

@moonlightlullaby same. Although about once every other week or so, I'm doing "stuff" and somehow enough dirty dishes pile up so the top basket is full and I can run the short cycle.

Then instead of taking out the clean bowls, etc., I leave them in there and take them out as I use them🤣

Things were better back in the day.

I live in the U.K., but I can totally relate. Things were so much more personable back then, with generally more patience and less self-entitlement. I wonder if it’s because of the immediacy of social media, Amazon selling stuff delivered to our doors within hours, that sort of thing?
We just need phones to communicate now, so perhaps that could be why too…
I'm sorry you miss these days. They sound like a wrenching hell to me though haha. I wouldn't want to have to deal with someone just to get gas. I want to get gas and get out of there.

I guess it all depends on how the world is when you come up.
