No one 'just knew' anything. We were taught, or not taught, or learned through experience. Babies do not come into the world with an innate sense of not eating the detergent capsules, or consuming the pills left out by a harassed parent. People not brought up in the city have to learn to cope with traffic and crowds. People not brought up in the countryside need to learn to understand the natural world is not as ordered as they might think it is. I agree that there appears to be a lot of patronising labelling, but it's only patronising if you haven't learned because you haven't been taught.
