Are you doing weird things lately? Feel free to share.
I recently came across music that was played in K-Mart stores in the 80s and 90s. It's all from worn cassettes and the fidelity ranges from "sorta OK" to "boombox at the bottom of a fish tank".
Why am I listening? I'm not sure. I listen to everything from The Beatles to Stormtroopers Of Death, Butthole Surfers to Tony Bennett. I suspect that I find the muzak arrangements interesting. Maybe I enjoy my brain being beaten into submission by Lite-FM.
Maybe the truth is I do long for the K-Mart days. I imagine what's going on while these songs(and LOUD announcements) played in a K-Mart. Children and parents perusing, older folks ambulating snailishly, teens being mischievous. Maybe someone is checking out clothes or shoes, maybe getting a snack or even having a muffler installed--yes, K-Marts were the forerunners of Wal-Mart. Maybe a young couple was discovering new love, or breaking up. Must be terrible to have Richard Marx blaring during such pivotal life moments. Maybe the kids were terribly bored and doing a Usain Bolt away from their folks. It's all lost to history now.
There's a lot of this on You Tube, complete with announcements of sales. They don't mention prices all the time, but when they do, you'll spit out your coffee. Lots of long-gone brands, too. It's Amnesia Avenue. Enjoy!
