question about funerals

I have a funeral coming up of a close friend, which unfortunately I am unable to get too because it's a different part of the country. I want to pay my respects, so I thought about writing a eulogy and then getting someone else (who will be able to attend), to read it. do people do that?. is it acceptable?

I'd write a letter to the family. They will appreciate it and there may be things you say they then want to include in the eulogy.
