question about funerals

I have a funeral coming up of a close friend, which unfortunately I am unable to get too because it's a different part of the country. I want to pay my respects, so I thought about writing a eulogy and then getting someone else (who will be able to attend), to read it. do people do that?. is it acceptable?

Well I could be wrong but people are asked to write one by the family I do not think you can just write it yourself because it has to be arranged in the service and it it is written in the menue . Or what ever the call the pamphlet that is given out as you walk in. Maybe send a card to the family.
