question about funerals

I have a funeral coming up of a close friend, which unfortunately I am unable to get too because it's a different part of the country. I want to pay my respects, so I thought about writing a eulogy and then getting someone else (who will be able to attend), to read it. do people do that?. is it acceptable?

Funerals are often very personally arranged.
If you know the deceased's family probably best to ask if that's the right place for it.

Or maybe take out a section of the BDM column in the local paper and place it there
