That's what everyone I know says, and I think they're right. There's people who lean empathic and there's people who lean sympathic.
The more empathy you have the more you're able to feel and understand others perspectives.
While people who sympathize, they care about things they personally relate to.
For example, they can't genuinely understand why you're hurt from having a fuck buddy if they think it's disgraceful and stay virgins til they're married. They will probably find your problem silly / dramatic and a bit of "I told you so" attitude.
However If your wife or husband cheated on you and you asked for support they would go "THAT'S SO AWFUL!!" and comfort and validate you because they morally agree that cheating is wrong.
Meanwhile someone empathic will be able to feel your pain and feelings no matter who they themselves are.
