I think that over the years, people have added lyrics (I just did a search and found a version with a verse about eating pizza!)

But originally it was an African-American spiritual. What's coming round the mountain is the second coming of Christ, or the rapture, or the end of the world. Horses do play a role in the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

And of course, any spiritual that sings of liberation from the travails of the world has a layer of meaning involving slavery, and the hope for freedom from it (and a lot sooner than at the end of time!)

Hence, the song is full of metaphors.

I sing this to my cat but instead say " She'll be meowing around the mountain when she comes, she'll be meowing around the mountain when she comes." cause she always meows for food what I'm in the kitchen even right after I give her food. 🤣
