I kinda got humbled yesterday

I was in a part of town that is often talked about in a derogatory way by people that I know. It’s a place where no one from my side of town would want to live, its houses are small and horrid and the people thought of as rough.
I was nervous walking through, some girls asked me the time and I thought they were going to ask for money or try to steal my phone. Instead they said I had a nice accent and asked where I’m from. When I told them, they said that it was a really nice part of town but they liked the friendliness and community of where they lived.
I kind of expected them to be jealous of us in the nicer part.

Yes, poor people are actually human beings. Tell THAT to your wife.
Strongtea · 26-30, M
Ok ok, her thoughts and views on those people were wrong. She doesn’t like to go into those areas so she just doesn’t know. @ElyssTTTrucks

There are good people who come from poor areas, just like wealthy ones.
Strongtea · 26-30, M
Yeah, I was being a bit like the old me and I had some preconceptions of them. They totally changed my mind and made me realise that I needed to check myself whenever I get those thoughts. @MellyMel22

@Strongtea There’s good and bad in all neighborhoods. Sometimes seeing more of one makes us see them for that.
🔫 give me ur wallet

It has happened before, I got mugged by a group of teenage girls in London once. One had a knife, it was so scary. I do get nervous if I suspect something like that is happening.@hiddenpaerl
@Strongtea 🫂sorry for that glad ur ok
Strongtea · 26-30, M
Hey thanks. 🥺😊@hiddenpaerl

A long time ago I delivered mail in an area like that. Most who live there are great people. If something unfortunate happens they will have your back.
Strongtea · 26-30, M
It really surprised me, but yes I think you’re right.@Crazywaterspring

@Strongtea If someone is having a cookout they will give you a plate. That food ranges from very good to awesome.

While rich people compliment each other on their stuff people in poorer neighborhoods help each other with their needs.
I'm probably beneath the people you're talking about.
That doesn't make me less intelligent , less of a human being, or less important.
It doesn't make me a crook either as I've never stole anything a day in my life.
Part of growing up is putting away old assumptions and being willing to become a better person in the process.

@Justmeraeagain Isn’t that what he confessed that he learned and feels humbled by not feeling before?
Strongtea · 26-30, M
Yes, you’re right, my wife and her mum refer to them as as ghastly little people, but I found them really nice. I’m actually really glad@Justmeraeagain

where are they from
Strongtea · 26-30, M
🙄Tbh the ‘brown’ ones were the nicest. The others were nice, but were giggling at things I said/what I was wearing. @RachelLia2003

Is this like the clown that hides in the drain and smiles as you walk past?
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
It's very easy to jump to conclusions based on what is fundamentally gossip. It's great that you saw the real people, rather than the rumors about them.
Strongtea · 26-30, M
Thankyou. Yes, it was a horrible experience. I think you could be right, maybe young people are an easier target? @FreddieUK
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@Strongtea It's sad that it was young people doing it (not confined to London of course) and the adults responsible for bringing them up have a lot to answer for.
Strongtea · 26-30, M
You’re right. I doubt they attended church, we’re probably just left alone to do what they wanted.@FreddieUK
