I Prefer Being Alone But Hate Being Alone

It's a pathetic situation, I'm just extremely selective of who my company is. i always get the feeling that I'm better off being alone than waste time with passer bys. Am I just being selfish or self defensive or just plain distrusting?
I probably crave for love and attention from people.
