Lately I have been switching off - from news, newspapers, all the rest of it. Possibly part of this is to protect myself from the noise of others. You can drown in this.
Nevertheless, the ultimate intent is not to live alone, self-sufficient, but more to be there for others and also to recognise when others are truly there for me. That dimension is important, at least I think so.
So as I see it, it is to withdraw in order to be truly there for others, beyond all the superficialities of our modern world. Life IS relationship, inter-being.
A story from Buddhism is of the Buddha descending into one of the many Hells of Buddhist cosmology. He holds a lamp. By its light the people there see for the first time that others share their own space....."There are others here besides myself!" The beginning of true liberation, the moral sense. Empathy.
This is Love, which the Enlightened One has named "the liberation of the heart," and "the most sublime beauty"
