Meltycat you are misunderstanding.
They were killed because the way THEY dressed made them different.
Avoiding young men who could possibly take unnecessary offence at that difference could be a matter of personal safety not contempt as you stated.
Obviously the vast majority of folks who dress the way you describe are perfectly friendly and would never harm them.
However, would you gamble your life on that fact, or would you refuse the bet and cross the street?
It is incredibly sad that the actions of some tarnish the reputation of many, but that is the world we live in.
It’s no different from a lone woman crossing the street when she sees a man and feels unsafe. Over 99% of the time the man is genuinely no threat to her, but she doesn’t want to risk him being part of the small percentage who would be.
