Yes, and I get most of the paint on me.
Yes... I hate white... though gloss is better than emulsion for those areas...

No, but I did experiment with a very light blueish/gray and it was nice... peaceful and cool, but I did notice the difference in lighting. White ceilings mean a brighter room and most any other color will lessen the brightness in the room.
