“Real isn’t how you are made. Its’s a thing that happens to you. ..”

When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.”

“Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. 🐰

“Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.”

“Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?”

“It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept.

Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby.

But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

When you’re loved for a long time. You become real. When you’re real, you don’t mind being hurt. This is why the people who do mind don’t get to become real. Typically once you’re real, it’s only after you’ve been through a lot that looks bad. That doesn’t matter though, because you look perfect to whoever made you real.

-That was my interpretation of this!

You got it right. :)

Sometimes you feel that there are people who don’t understand you. And maybe they don’t. But they don’t matter. There are people in your life who do (did). Don’t forget them.

Life’s challenges can sometimes rob you of the ability to see your worth. People’s behavior towards you may make you question if you are acceptable.

Remember the people who have loved you (or once loved you) or the circumstances that have shaped you to who you are now. Those are the ones that matter when you face trials in life that make you question your ability to see your worth.

Remember: once you are real, you can’t be unreal again.

It’s a very sweet story. One of my granddaughters’ favorite.
