I want to hear your "what if" moments...
Its long, so apologies!
About 10 years ago I was walking my dog through a carpark to get to a sportsfield where she could run loose and a car pulled up and stopped about 10 feet away from me. The passenger window wound down and a young guy called me over. Now, before anyone steps in and calls me an idiot, i want to point out that it was 6:30am in a sleepy little uk town where nothing ever happens. It was daylight and within sight of multiple houses and i had my dog with me who was the size of a german shephard, black with yellow eyes and a face that people usually crossed the street so as not to pass. So my surroundings were about as safe as possible and i wasnt exatly on high alert for danger. I just assumed he needed directions as that happened a lot where i lived.
I started walking over and i heard a male voice say "holy shit, she's actually coming over". Thats when my alarm bells went off. I stopped in my tracks and realised there were 4 guys in this car and they were all looking kinda wound up like they were anticipating something. The guy in the passenger seat tried to get me to come closer and i shook my head and said my dog wasnt friendly enough. He looked at her, seeming to be sizing her up and, as she's not a fan of eye contact, or strangers, she growled. It seemed to throw them a bit and i took the opportunity to give the car a wide birth and move on.
I often still think about that moment and wonder what would have happend if I'd gotten closer or if my dog hadn't been such an anti social badass. Were they honestly stupid enough to try something sinister in full daylight, in view of houses on someone with the meanest looking dog? Or was it just going to be some stupid prank? Or was it totally innocent and the guy I heard was merely surprised that a woman was approaching a car full of men?
I'd love to know the answer but glad I didnt find out the hard way.
I'd love to hear your stories of similar incidences where you look back and wonder what would have happened if just one thing had been slightly different
