I Did One Brave Thing Today

There was a company that I applied to thinking I would like the job. They called me telling me that they were interested. Then I did an interview with them and realized that I would not like to do what the job entailed. I should have been brave and told them that after that interview but I didn't. I did a second interview yesterday that lasted almost an hour. I didn't like that they were asking me all of these personal questions about me. I was completely fake the entire interview acting like I would love working there. When they kept asking me what I want in the job, I didn't know what to say. I embellished and said this would be good for character but I was totally lying. After that interview, I still wasn't confident that I would like the job. I am supposed to do another interview for it this Friday. This morning, I just emailed the woman who interviewed me and told her that something came up and that I am no longer interested in the position. I blocked her phone number and e-mail. Hopefully they won't try to contact me again. I apologized in the email for wasting their time. But I realized that I am tired of interviewing for jobs that I don't think I would like to do just because the pay might be good. I HAVE to like it. Maybe that will take me a while to do but I have to believe it is worth the wait. I do feel guilty about going through two interviews and then shutting them down but I would rather quit during the interview stage than for them to hire me and then I quit after a week. And at least my parents didn't know about these interviews or all hell would break loose and they would tell me I was stupid for saying no to a job opportunity. But hopefully I find something that I would like doing.

Well done on taking the decision.

Thank you. It was hard and I felt a little bad turning down the company after two interviews with them but sometimes you need to do things that are selfish for yourself.

@JewStar4Life: Dont feel bad, you saved them time and effort, compared to coasting into a job you'd then quit. Given how many companies will interview then never tell the interviewees even that they didn't make the cut, it could be (at worst) a little karmic balancing.

& You're not being selfish, just sensible & looking after yourself

@firefall: Thank you. And yeah, it's true how when a company fires you, they don't give you two weeks notice for you to find another job but yeah when you quit a company, you're expected to give them two weeks notice?! Where's the fair balance in that? All I know is that I need to be more careful when applying for jobs and to make sure that this will be a position I'll like.

@JewStar4Life: what sort of work would you like to get?

@firefall: I don't know really. My dream job is acting but there aren't any good theaters to audition for where I live and I do not have the money to live out of state. I currently have a good job right now as a weight loss consultant but they haven't been giving me a lot of hours lately because of how slow business is. I wish I could find another weight loss company where I could do that. I applied at a hotel for front desk. I think I would like that because I would be in a luxurious setting and I like customer interacting. I still haven't heard anything back from the hotel. I gave them a genuine interview. The only reason I could think of for them not hiring me was that I currently have a job but I told them they only give me Sunday mornings and afternoons. I hope that's not the reason.

@JewStar4Life: They're unlikely to avoid hiring you because you currently have a job (the reverse, most HR will find that a desirable factor in employing someone). It's more likely you lost out because they hired the relative of an existing employee, or some other factor not subject to reason or logic :(

If that's what appeals, I'd send a CV* to other local upmarket hotels as well.

*resume? not sure what americans call it

@firefall: We call it resume but I know what a CV is. lol
