Years ago, the way I understood the world changed. And my politics changed with it.
I'm not interested in arguing which "side" is right or wrong.
What sticks with me is something else. I can understand how very different people arrive at their beliefs, even when I strongly disagree with them.
Sometimes I see opinions that I find deeply wrong, even disturbing. But I can still recognize the structure of the thinking behind them, because I remember what it felt like to think that way.
So I don't really have the comfort of saying, "I could never be like that."
I was.
That's exactly what makes me more careful about who I become now.
