Schedule a time to talk to his principal and teacher. They can let the other staff and faculty know about the situation and keep an eye out for him. Is there a friend/family member who can walk him home?
My daughter has suffered through similar things and that is what I have done. I also conferenced her father (who lives in a different state) on the meeting which seemed to help with allowing the principal to understand that both parents were concerned and we had both heard similar stories from our daughter which, I feel, gave the situation more credit.

I don't understand where the school authorities are while this is happening. If it was my son, I would go to the school and request a meeting with the principal, guidance counselor, and the bullies and their parents. I would then put the bullies on notice, leave my child alone or deal with me off of school grounds. That way all parties are put on notice, No one messes with my kids without repercussions. If that failed to do the trick I would contact the police. The idea of 8 to 12 grade kids picking on a 2nd grader is disgusting. If your son was older I would agree with jon2403 about martial arts lessons but I think the age difference is to great at this point but wouldn't hurt for him to learn now. Can I ask where you live that this is going on in school?
Where I live 2nd grade is in Elementary school and has a different bus schedule from the High school.. so the Elementary kids aren't in contact with any teens. So I'm confused..
Speak to someone in charge at the school and notify local authorities as well. If no improvement, consider transfering the child to another school.
Talk with the teachers Talk with the administrators about their ability to police such a wide range of ages. And if you can nail down who these individuals are, talk to their parents. That is beyond bullying.
