I have linked a picture of 20 rectangles. Pick one, and I will tell you the one you likely picked. Read the description.

Some of you might know what I'm up to. If you do, don't spoil it for others. In the link below, is a picture with 20 numbered rectangles. What I want you to do is choose the one that you find the most visually pleasing--i.e. which rectangle you feel is the most satisfying to your eye, and which you find the most "perfect." Don't tell me what it is. Just tell me what you had in mind, and I will tell you the number of the rectangle. If you're like 90% of people, you probably picked a very particular rectangle, or one of the ones very similar to it. This isn't a mathematical trick... not really. Not in the same way as the guessing your number games. In fact, the only numbers here are the numbers on the rectangles to make for ease of reference. But there's a very amazing and elegant explanation to why 90% of people choose this particular rectangle. Here's the image: http://i.imgur.com/P7koQvg.jpg

Okay, I picked one

Did you choose rectangle 11?
looper233
No, I picked 18. The high ratio (maybe 3.5:1) seemed like the most interesting in the group.
looper233
You should have said the most ideal rectangle... I might have chosen 11 for that.
TetrisGuy · 26-30, M
That's what I implied, though "attractive" and "ideal" mean the same thing to me when it comes to rectangles xD
Is there any particular reason you would have chosen 11 for an "ideal" rectangle?
looper233
Well, 11 seems like it's about the golden ratio. I think this makes it comfortable in its ideal rectangular-ness. 18, on the other hand, I like, largely because it's slightly unconventional. I'm an architect, so part of what I want to do is make you slightly uncomfortable so you notice, for instance, your surroundings.

That's exactly my point I'm trying to make with the Golden Ratio. xD

Yes, it's very calming. But we don't always want to be clam... Otherwise, we would have no need for red paint ;-)
TetrisGuy · 26-30, M
xD I've a legitimate phobia of red lights, and the color red makes me rather uneasy. xD My room is blue. To be exact, Valspar "Splish Splash" blue :P
Ahh the Golden Ratio gets me all fuzzy inside. I made a poster of it, two actually ^_^ one's a strict Golden Spiral, and the other is a Fibonacci Golden Spiral. :3 I've a phi shirt, too :D I'm obsessed with phi a little too much. I scarred the Golden Spiral into the back of my hand because I love it so much and can't really get a tattoo yet xD
looper233
Oh, damn. No scarring please - even if it's for a good cause. Love yourself as much as we do. Goodnight, punk.

xD It's the only thing I've ever scarred into me. It was semi-intentional. Started out drawing it with a bad pen, then scratching myself a bit on accident. Didn't think it would actually stay there permanently. Thought it would be more like a temporary tattoo xD
