Need, I think. A source of proof could be a study that was done on babies awhile back (waaaaaaay while back).
Every baby was given the appropriate amount of food and monitored closely to ensure it didn't accidentally hurt itself, and they were all changed and cared for appropriately, BUT half the babies were given attention and the other half were not. After a couple months, the babies that were not cuddled started to DIE. The experiment was put on an abrupt halt and the whole thing canceled, thankfully.

It is a need. Humans are social primates.
