Boston Marathon bombing-do people think the race security might have been less than useful?

From what I've seen today, two ordinary-looking young men with backpacks simply shed their backpacks against the buildings and strolled away. There was nothing about them to cause suspicion. There were simply too many people there to check what everyone was carrying.

Even in airports, all those security people are basically window dressing. While the odds of them nabbing a clever bomber are small, they will catch the deranged idiots, and they just might trip over one of the brighter ones. Poor odds are better than none at all, so even though it costs us a fortune to staff the airports, I'll pay my share for the illusion that I'm safer.

Discarded bags are suspicious items, no matter how you look at it.
