Can you convince yourself something you really don't believe?

dfgdfgdfg99
It's called 'Bad Faith' according to Sartre, and is likely a futile exercise bound for a desperate realisation. It's usually best to address the issue directly, accepting that which you are attempting to circumvent. Thereafter, you can adapt your mindset to benefit most from the least preferred potential outcome, or go further by amending the constraints of the situation. For example, if you're trying to convince yourself that you are confident, it's probably best in the long run to realise your options are either to accept that you are a retiring type of personality and plan your goals accordingly, i.e. no jobs in PR, or to go some way toward amending the situation by, for example, taking up assertiveness classes.
In either situation a certain amount of acceptance is required before any real progress can be achieved. In order to arrive at this acceptance, Bad Faith must be abandoned.

Yes. Most definitely yes. It's dangerous, so don't do it. There are consequences that last forever when you do that you will not realize until you are more mature. Children are brilliant at doing this because they are forced to fit into the adult world- it's sad- because later they are the ones that have to sort it all out for themselves when they are adults are in control of their own lives.

i wish i knew the answer to that one.. the therapists say its possible. that if you keep repeating a statement you will start to believe it in time, even if you didn't at first. never worked for me, unfortunately..

Sure can. :) The trick is not taking advantage of it too often otherwise the inconsistencies of what your trying to convince yourself of and the reality become too obvious and it all falls apart. . :P

No, but I sure can manipulate the situation to make it sound believable to everyone else...and that's what counts! What YOU believe!

If a person wants to believe something real bad they will! even if they know the truth deep down inside.

No, I can't lie, the best I can do is force myself to do something I don't want to.
