What do I do about a friend who is saying hurtful things behind my back and saying I am hostile? I don't want it to end

If he is treating you like this, then he is not your friend. He is just an unhappy person that feels bad about himself, so he says and does mean things to you to make himself feel better and to make you feel bad.

Do not continue having this mean person as a friend any longer. Get rid of him and go find yourself some good friends who will treat you nicely, and would not dream of being mean to you. I have been in this situation before myself, and ended our so called friendship. I'm glad I did it, I do not regret it one bit, and believe me you won't either. I even made a new and better friend shortly afterwards. No one deserves to be treated like this, please stop talking to him.

With friends like him, why have enemies.
