Does God punish us when we sin? If so, how do we know that he does?

Apparently, there is something wrong with the bookkeeping up there. Sinners seem to get away sometimes and very often innocent people seem to get punished severely. I suggest to complain about it only if you can handle the deeds of 7 billion suspects constantly without a mistake...
