Why do most people call people in the army heroes? When most of them haven't performed a specific heroic act.

they have agreed to lay their life on the line, that's pretty heroic to me.

That haven't agreed that. they don't really believe they will be harmed in any way.

you really believe that? what is the job of the military? anyone that joins and doesn't realize it's a possibility of going in harms way is an idiot.

Because only a small majority are killed, there is about one and a half million active servicemen in the USA and less than 2000 have died in the last 10 years (and this includes the war in Afghanistan). Going on death rates its more heroic to be an Atlantic fisherman.

Laying ones life on the line and dying are two different things. Yes, there are jobs that are dangerous, but most others are done for profit. The military isn't, especially for the grunts on the ground. Ad I believe you're wrong on the figures, more like almost 4500 died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, small percentage, but add in numbers of wounded and the numbers climb significantly. We're just better at saving combat injured soldiers now.
